Workshop for School Children – Creating Animation Films

I am collaborating with the Saatchi Gallery on a project to encourage children from local schools to participate and engage with contemporary art through creating animation films.  As I’m sure you know, state schools are struggling and I just wondered if you wouldn’t mind letting your members know about this new initiative in order to encourage partners to come on board to support us.The project is to offer 10 local schools a match funded 1 day animation workshop at the Saatchi Gallery and we need £1,250 to make this happen.  Classes of children from the age of 5-16 will be invited to actively engage with the process and experience of contemporary art through devising, creating and presenting their own animated film – to inspire and engage.   Below are further details on the project itself and exposure opportunities for backers.  I would be very grateful for your help and any other suggestions you may have.

PROJECT DETAILS:
The project aims to inspire young people’s imagination and expand perspectives for future engagement.  On the day the children will actively engage in the following:

  • A gallery tour
  • Narrative exploration, role play, character development
  • Storyboard ideas to develop sequences
  • Create backdrops
  • Create an animation
  • Act out and record script
  • Add additional music and sound effects

The school will then have our top ten tips on creating their own film premiere for the rest of the school, their family and friends.

EXPOSURE OPPORTUNITIES:

The Saatchi Gallery will create a Facebook page to include all films and interactive dialogue.  We also have added exposure on the Saatchi Gallery website (the Gallery, on average, gets over 500,000 visitors per exhibition), collaboration with the Royal Court Theatre and through the Gallery magazine; Art & Music.  We have support from Soho Shorts, as well as our connections with First Light.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT:

This initiative is initially starting through the Saatchi Gallery and we have further plans to roll the model out to other settings including stately homes & gardens and museums – both Nymans and Wakehurst / Kew have shown interest.  Below are details on myself and other projects I have developed, I hope this gives you enough information and please do let me know if you would like any further details.

My experience is as a film maker for the BBC producing the 3 x 40min observational documentary series ‘Secret World of Y3′ which focussed on young people expressing themselves through film directly to camera. I have also produced films for most of the other major broadcasters.

I now focus on facilitating a wide range of opportunities for young people, from the age of 7yrs, to get involved with film making in order to inspire their future engagement and development.  As Shoot it For Yourself Productions we have had notable success including a First Light funded project winning the Guardian Young Environmentalist of the Year:http://www.shootitforyourself.co.uk/

I  specialise in engaging young people in a variety of subjects through the process of them creating their own  films.  I have worked with Fishbourne Roman Palace and Great Dixter house & garden as well as through Creative Partnerships with schools on a wide variety of young person focussed projects.
